Apple: A Brief Update

A few things have changed in the past couple days since I last wrote about the upcoming Septbember 9th update that Apple will be announcing. First, it appears more and more likely that both the Macbook and the Macbook Pro will receive updates soon (as in this year).

I’ll give the Macbook around a 65-70% chance of being updated in the 3rd quarter announcement, and the Pro somewhere around a 35-40% chance of the same. I believe both of them will receive a redesign before the holiday season, but my guess is the Macbook Pro won’t be updated just yet. Here’s why: The Pro already has the brushed aluminum finish that Apple has latched onto recently. For it’s size (15 and 17 inch), the Pro’s height is already excellent – one inch appears much slimmer proportionately than the 1.08 inch height of the regular Macbook (at 13.3 inches). It may receive a more tapered appearance similar to that of the Macbook Air, so that the open end is much slimmer than the hinge/battery side of things, but such an update would not be nearly as dramatic as what I’m expecting for the Macbook. I’d peg a Macbook Pro update at around the late October, early November timeframe.

In other news, information regarding new Apple patents has surfaced. They depict a tablet-style Macbook. The patent mainly covers multi-touch input capabilities and various means of controlling a user interface with touchscreen inputs. It is always encouraging to see these patents, as they are indications, if nothing else, that Apple has not given up on the idea of a tablet Macbook. On the other hand, it is important to also take such news with a grain of salt, because Apple has filed for touchscreen patents before in 2005 and 2006. Many large companies like to file patents on anything and everything imaginable – that way, if they ever decide to make a product, they already have rights to the design/concept/technology.

P.S. I can’t help but comment on the graphic. Who does Apple think will use this product – aliens? They have got to have somebody that can sketch hands better than that…
