Macbook: The Unboxing

Finally, one week later, I’m getting around to posting the photos of my Macbook unboxing experience. It was nice. There was a halo of light and an angelic chorus and everything when I opened the box. 😉

Anyway, check it out:

Packaging

Packaging

My first thought when I opened this was that Apple still isn’t totally environmentally friendly. From here, it looks like they used a ton of styrofoam to fill out the box that the Macbook box was in. Seriously, it was a box within a box. Want to talk about waste? This is a great example of it. Just make the inside box a bit tougher and lose the big ugly brown one. That way, you save resources on shipping costs (less weight), materials, and we all get a nice warm fuzz feeling because of it. That being said, Apple is still doing much better than the majority of PC manufacturers.

Turns out, the styrofoam use wasn’t as bad as I originally thought. Check out the photo above. I dropped in a stack of 3×5″ notecards for scale. Each of these is a little bigger than my fist, so it ends up being a relatively minute amount of material.

Apple also used a plastic cover over their white box to prevent scratches and unsightly marks. I’m kinda conflicted by all this. On the one hand, I’d like to see Apple eliminate all unnecessary use of oil-derived products and go as green as possible. On the other hand, I still like the fact that they care about the visual impact of their product, enough so that even the outside of the box matters to them.

Handle

Handle

So far as I can tell, this is the only part of the actual Apple packaging that is plastic. There’s a chance it is made with some sort of corn-starch, but I don’t know for sure.

I love this stuff. It’s like nerd porn. Show me a beautiful piece of hardware and I’m yours.

And again with the sexy hardware.

I’m tired of throwing in commentary. Enjoy the rest of the pics. Notice their extremely anal attention to detail and stuff. Basic Apple nonsense, and I love it.
